A couple months ago we had done some research on the impact that falls have on seniors. We posted some articles on falls, hoping that seniors and the family caregivers and professional caregivers who serve them would be helped by this information.

You may have noticed that no new postings have been made in almost two months to our news blog here at Family Private Care. No, it was not a “senior moment” that made us forget. The unfortunate truth is…I missed a step and fell down 13 steps! My arm is still in a sling and typing is just now becoming a part of daily life once again. So, hopefully, we will be making more posts to our news page in the near future.

The fall caused a dislocated shoulder and torn ligament. It was an interesting feeling bumping and bouncing all the way down those 13 steps. When I finally arrived at the bottom, my shoulder was clearly dislocated. In the moments and days that followed there was the trip to the Emergency Room, follow- up visits to the orthopedists, and X-Rays, MRI, and finally Physical Therapy. It is amazing how much can be learned from textbooks. I have learned that it is much more that can be learned from experience. Now, I creep down the stairs clinging to the handrail. I always look at the steps I am about to navigate. I do not carry anything that blocks my view of the steps. (All things I did not do on that fateful Sunday evening in March.)

Being the patient, instead of providing caregivers for seniors needing care, has been an eye-opening experience. Appointments to keep, therapy to go to, exercises to do twice daily, medical decisions to make for myself, etc. It isn’t easy being a patient. And it isn’t easy being dependent on others for help with what had been easy tasks.

I have always had the “book” knowledge of this, but I now have first-hand experience as do many of our staff. We are still committed to putting every client first and helping make their home care experience as pleasant and convenient as possible.

Family Private Care continues to hold the bar of the standard of excellence in homecare. Since 1997 we have been actively serving seniors with Companions, Certified Nursing Assistants, Licensed Practical Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses. We are not new to homecare, even if you are! If you have a home care need, or just need information on where to turn for help, we would be delighted to assist you in any way possible. Whether you have already had a fall, or have a family member you are concerned is a fall risk, we would love to help. Family Private Care also serves people with cancer, diabetes, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Dementia, ALS, and many other diagnoses. Please call today to learn more about how we can help.

We are good at what we do…just not real good at going down the steps! But, I have a distinct feeling that I’ll be a lot better at it than I used to be!
